BBA on Tour - May 2017

20th May 2017

BBA were on the road this month. Visiting Southwold to look at the Lighthouse and to Owlsworth’s yard in Reading to see how the mill repairs were going.

We visited Southwold Lighthouse as it’s a ‘sister’ lighthouse to St Mary Island Lighthouse at Whitley Bay (designed and built at the same time). It is still in the care of Trinity House and a working lighthouse. We wanted to see how they were managing the redecoration and environmental controls at their lighthouse. We were shown round by one of Trinity Houses’ maintenance team. Andy was so knowledgeable about all aspects of the maintenance (not surprising as he has responsibility from East Scotland to Gibraltar!) and we came away having learnt a lot that we can put that into practice at St Mary.

The trip to Owlsworth IJP Ltd’s yard was to see the progress of the Fulwell Windmill moving sail parts- brake wheel, cap, fan tail and sails. http://www.owlsworthijp.co.uk/

All is coming along well. The size is huge when seen close to. The cap and its associated items will weigh about twelve tons when installed, then there will be the sails to add. The timbers are being carefully worked in oak and douglas fir under the watchful eye of our consultant, Luke Bonwick of Bonwick Milling Heritage Consultancy http://www.bonwick.co.uk/

It’s getting quite exciting now!
