Heritage Lottery Repair Grants awarded for two BBA churches - April 2017

12th April 2017

Two of our churches have recently been awarded Round One HLF North East Development Grants for their stonework repair:

The medieval Grade II* St Andrew’s at Dalton le Dale and the Victorian Grade II St Mary Magdalene at Belmont designed by the eminent ecclesiastical architect William Butterfield and consecrated in 1857.

Both of these County Durham churches are not only places of worship but also of welcome and the repairs are to improve the welcome and life of the building by tackling the damp and poor condition of stonework.

The grants will enable us to carry out the development of the repair strategies and in the case of St Andrew, particularly its ancient doorway, where we will be using ortho-photography to capture its detail. Hopefully the successful completion the Development Phase at the end of this year will lead to a Round Two Delivery Phase with the works programmed to be carried out in 2018.
