Roker Pier Entrance Building June 2016

1st June 2016

Our competition winning design for a new entrance building to the Grade II listed Victorian Roker Pier and Lighthouse for Sunderland City Council, is due to commence on site later this year.

The new structure will provide a covered entrance to the tunnel within the pier. The tunnel, which is over 600m long, was created within the pier to enable the shore based lighthouse keeper to access the lighthouse in bad weather. The features within the tunnel have been left undisturbed for many years and visitors will be able to experience the route taken by the keepers.

The design hopes to make a visual statement that is of its time- just as the pier and lighthouse were of their time. The use of robust materials reflects the muscular approach of the original buildings, whilst the glass element provides a lightness to balance the structure.
